Everyone who came through the door – even the bartenders, cashier and coat-check attendant – paid a $10 admission as their donation and Jones New York agreed to match proceeds dollar for dollar. And for every pair of donated jeans, apparel store Aeropostale pledged to send a brand new pair to the Caribbean country.
The crowd was an impressive showing, considering icy conditions, an imminent snow storm and the fact that there’s no regular Monday Salsa Night at the Center City venue, said organizer and Estilo Dance Studio owner Mike Andino.
The salseros partied like it was Friday and weren’t disappointed. There were two performances:
- A sensual salsa routine by Jose Maldonado and Susan Ospina. View here: Jose and Susan – Haiti fund-raiser
- And a faster-tempo number by Liz Becerra and Gary Moreau. View here: Liz and Gary – Haiti fund-raiser
Between performances, there was a drawing for raffle prizes. Winners could chose from a Full Weekend Pass to the Philadelphia Salsa Fest in October ($185 value) to free passes to Salsa Night venues ($20-$30 value) or unlimited lessons at local dance studios ($80 and up) to private dance instruction ($75-$90 per hour).

Salsa Night raises $5K for Haiti (Video)
Sidewalks were still icy and another snow storm was brewing, but that didn’t stop about 150 salseros from coming out Monday to Brasil’s Nightclub in support of a fund-raiser for Haiti earthquake victims. The “Hope for Haiti” event raised more than $5,300, more than 130 pairs of shoes and more than 100 pairs of lightly-worn jeans were donated.
