Salsa Baron’s Ball

Palo Pinto County

Tickets are now available for the Salsa Baron’s Ball benefitting Palo Pinto Challenge, set for 6:30-9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Sheriff’s Posse Building.
Tickets are $100 per couple and prices include a fajita dinner and a chance to win $1,500 grand prize. Tickets can be purchased at the Mineral Wells Area Chamber of Commerce.

Salsa Night raises $5K for Haiti (Video)

Sidewalks were still icy and another snow storm was brewing, but that didn’t stop about 150 salseros from coming out Monday to Brasil’s Nightclub in support of a fund-raiser for Haiti earthquake victims. The “Hope for Haiti” event raised more than $5,300, more than 130 pairs of shoes and more than 100 pairs of  lightly-worn jeans were donated.

At 36, Maria Finn was starting that new, hopeful stage in life that comes with marriage and the promise of family. Less than two years later, her husband cheated on her.

Strange how life, in an instant, can drop out from under you. Finn’s marriage ended, but she has a powerful comeback story and her vehicle of transformation was a surprise: tango. She has written a memoir of the experience, “Hold Me Tight & Tango Me Home.”

MIX: Brooklyn band Chicha Libre plays to Charlie Chaplin’sPay Day” and “The Idle Class” and guitarist Gyan Riley to shorts from Harry Smith’s Early Abstractions,” 8 p.m. at Merkin Concert Hall, 129 W. 67th St., $40-$45. Part of the New York Guitar Festival.

FUND-RAISER: New York Latin bands Zon del Barrio (salsa), Alma Moyo (bomba), Bryan Vargas & Ya Está (Afro-Latin soul) and Vaya (funk), along with the collective Welfare Poets and the dance groups Kalunga Neg Mawon and Paleros Dominicanos de Nueva York! come together for Caribe Negro for Haiti! — a fund-raising event — at Bruckner Bar & Grill, 1 Bruckner Blvd., Bronx, 7 p.m.-3 a.m. (Dance classes from 7 p.m.-9 p.m.). $15-$20.

KIDS: Hot Peas ’N Butter, a children’s musical group that mixes traditional Latin music, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz, folk and rock, at Queens Theater in the Park, 1 p.m. Also Feb. 7, 2 p.m., $12.

KIDS: Dan Zanes and Friends perform songs in both English and Spanish with tap dancer Derick K. Grant, buzuq player Tareq Abboushi, the Brooklyn Symphony Youth Orchestra and the BAM/Restoration DanceAfrica Ensemble, at BAM Opera House, 30 Lafayette Ave., Brooklyn, 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., $15-$25.

Haiti benefit Salsa dance Saturday

A salsa dance will be held Saturday Feb. 6 at Cornell's Willard Straight Hall Memorial Room. Intro salsa lesson by Felipe Rivera will be from 8-9 p.m. with dancing from 9 p.m. to midnight. There will also be a performance by Sabor Latino. A donation of $5 students and $10 non-students will go to UNICEF/Haiti. Admission includes food and non-alcoholic beverages. Free private dance lessons by Dance Hosts will be available all night.
