Swept away by the charms of salsa

The first step in learning how to dance salsa is to lose your fear.

“Yes, it’s a little intimidating at first to see other people dancing like professionals,” says Enrique Arias, who a few days ago was taking a salsa class for beginners at the Tango del Rey nightclub. “I still don’t feel totally comfortable, but I’m starting to get better.”

Bachata is both a musical style and dance born in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. Some common themes in its songs are those of lost love, lost hope and betrayal --all delivered through sexual double entendres which originally gave bachata a seedy reputation that kept it hidden in the lower class barrios of its own nation for decades. It wasn’t until the 1990's that bachata became a socially acceptable music on radio stations and in the clubs in the Dominican Republic.

Dancers jump and stomp their feet on black floors in front of a mirrored wall. Clad in yoga pants, tights and T-shirts, they learn a complete routine step by step, catching sips of water and standing in front of fans to cool down in between takes. In the corner, three men drum complex rhythms that echo throughout the space. It's a beginner African dance class at One Village Dance Centre, the new home for two Syracuse-centric dance programs.
